Sure it’s great living here in Decatur on the Tennessee river with all the boating, fishing, water skiing, and other recreational opportunities it provides and believe me, I do like to get out and take advantage of them all.
However with that said, I would be amiss to also not mention that my favorite lake in the entire state of Alabama is: Lewis Smith Lake (or simply Smith Lake) within Cullman, Walker, and Winston Counties only a short commuting distance south from both the Decatur and Hartselle city limits.

About Lewis Smith Lake
Lewis Smith Lake is truly one of Alabama’s treasures as well as one of its best kept secrets. This 21,200-acre lake is unique when compared to almost every other Alabama reservoir because of its inherent and surrounding beauty, it is like a precious stone that is blue, deep, and clear.
It was formed by a 300-foot high dam, completed in 1961 by Alabama Power Company on the Sipsey fork of the Black Warrior River. Smith Lake has 500 miles of shoreline, a watershed area of 944 square miles, a preservation period of 435 days, with a max depth of 264 feet.
The western side of the lake’s watershed is surrounded by the 180,000-acre Bankhead National Forest, which covers the dissected southern edge of the Cumberland Plateau. The Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, is Alabama’s only national Wild and Scenic River, and flows through the National Forest. The Sipsey Wilderness and theĀ Land of a Thousand Waterfalls are not far from the western banks of the Smith Lake within the Bankhead National Forest and is also home to Alabama’s largest tree, with a 21-foot circumference at its base.
